How to choose the right control system depends on the specific project and factory type, and the requirements of control system are different in different applications.
Most of the control system decisions can be attributed to the choice of PLC or DCS. Both of them play an important role in industrial automation control. PLC and DCS are constantly upgraded and improved in all aspects of industrial control, and have become indispensable tools in modern industrial production.
1. Difference between DCs and PLC
DCS (distributed control system): relative to the centralized control system, a new type of computer control system, developed and evolved from the centralized control system.
As a computer integrated system integrating process control and process monitoring, DCs has become a complete system integrating computer, communication, display and control technology under the drive of communication network. Its main features are distributed control, centralized operation, hierarchical management, flexible configuration and convenient configuration.
PLC (programmable logic controller): is a digital operation of the electronic system, designed for industrial environment applications. It adopts programmable memory, which is used to store program in it, execute user oriented instructions such as logic operation, sequence control, timing, counting and arithmetic operation, and control various types of machinery or production process through digital or analog input / output. It is the core part of industrial control.

DCS is developed from the traditional instrument panel monitoring system, which focuses on the control of instruments; PLC is developed from the traditional relay circuit, the original PLC does not even have analog processing capacity, therefore, PLC emphasizes the logic operation ability.
In terms of system scalability and compatibility:
For the PLC system, there is generally no or few expansion requirements, and there are few compatibility requirements. PLC generally uses a dedicated network structure, if two or more systems require resource sharing, it is very difficult for PLC.
DCS in the process of development is also the system of each manufacturer, but most of the DCS system, although the internal (process level) communication protocol is not the same, but the operation level network platform is the same choice of Ethernet, using the standard or deformation of TCP / IP protocol, which provides a very convenient scalability.
